Colorful Painted Kitchen Table – Wow!

Need a new kitchen table?

Transform the one you have with paint!

I spent the day painting with the most beautiful family. I have known them since their first daughter was born and she is now in high school!

Every year or so they are in need of some creative painting and I love it because they think up the most fun projects for me!
…This time it was their kitchen table.

The kitchen table was old and the nook it sets in was very simply decorated. I was asked to make it fun.

Take a look…

I am just getting the hang of taking, before photos, on my camera…The whole table was brown wood.  The before painting image (below) already has primer on the base.

What client asked for:
Make my table fun.
I love bright colors and Mary Engelbreit.
I just love all the checkers, stripes and bright colors in this magazine featuring MacKenzie-Childs.
I usually use a tablecloth but thought the bottom would look really fun with some color. Just work your magic!

How I Proceeded:
I asked if she had a preference of colors and what items regularly go on the table.
After seeing her china we decided to use colors that would compliment her plates.
Since the plates were very busy, I thought it wise to keep the flat tabletop more simple. With a simple top, the patterned plates, and colorful napkins, bright serving dishes, pitchers, and drinkware would not compete with the tabletop.
I had a feeling she was not going to put a tablecloth on this table when I was finished with it!

I used the lightest color in the plates to faux finish the flat tabletop. This color also complimented the color of the floor tile.

Since the table base was colorful and boldly painted, I added some weight to the tabletop edges. I figured this would add a splash of color to the top without competing with the items that would rest upon it.

Randomly throughout the day I checked in with my client to make sure she was digging the colors and design. She was!

Finally, it was finished. When her daughter saw the finished table she said,“Our kitchen table looks so happy!”
