Here’s how commissioning a custom mural works.
First I’d speak with you to find out what you want, and listen to any questions you may have.
Here is what this client wanted:
- We want a dinosaur mural.
- We have dinosaur bedding and a jeep bed and want the mural to look good with that.
- The room is really small so should we just paint the mural on one wall? What is the best layout to open up the room?
- My son has favorite dinosaurs and we want some of them big. Not too many because the room is small.
- How do we proceed?
I suggested we meet in person, with her son present. Apparently her 5-year-old has strong preferences when it comes to dinosaurs!
- We scheduled an in-home consultation. I brought my dinosaur reference items with me. Then her son picked out four of his favorite dinosaurs.
We needed a good layout for the dinosaur mural.
Since my clients biggest concern was the size of her sons room, I helped rethink the space.
- Together we rearranged furniture for maximum functionality of the room.
It’s amazing how turning one piece of furniture can really make a difference in how spacious a room feels.
- We looked at the available wall space and created our master plan. We mapped out the best places to place her son’s favorite dinosaurs.
- Since the mirrored closet would reflect whatever the opposite wall, that wall became the fullest part of the mural.
- We decided volcanoes erupting, a watering hole, some palm trees, and grasses would look great in the mural background.
On paint day, I had my client and her son be present while I sketched out his favorite dinosaurs. Since he wanted them specific sizes, I thought he would enjoy watching me project the dinosaurs onto his walls like a movie.
Once the sketch was on the wall my clients left for the day…and I got busy painting!

The layout of the mural was very deliberate.
- Notice how adding palm trees in the corners rounded out the corners.
- Mirrored closets reflect the mural and make the small room feel much larger. So I made sure the reflected mural would look great.
- I got the best layout for the mural. Together my client and I made sure the furniture was functionally placed. We made sure furniture would not cover up any important parts of the mural.
- Clouds were strategically painted to add movement and make the whole room feel like an environment.
- Volcanoes and layered palm trees add a feeling of depth to the room without overwhelming it.
The dinosaur mural in this boys bedroom turned out really cool. It really enhanced the walls and made the room feel larger than it was.
